Data sources and attribution

Every dataset behind a briefing, who it belongs to, and the licence it is used under.

A briefing is only as good as what it is built from, and you are entitled to know what that is. Nothing below is our own observation: GoNoGo Weather reads these sources, scores them against the limits you set, and writes the result.

Used under a licence that requires credit

  • OpenStreetMap contributors · Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0

    Marina and harbor positions, phone numbers and services behind “where you can get in”, the base map, and place-name search.

  • Open-Meteo · CC BY 4.0

    Hourly wind, waves, precipitation, air quality, the four-model forecast spread, and what the model said about the week a day ago.

  • US Coast Pilot (NOAA Office of Coast Survey) · US Government work, public domain

    The sailing directions that source the bar, shoaling and tidal-current hazard rows. Each such row cites its volume and paragraph, and the citation is shown wherever the row's source is shown.

  • GeoNames · CC BY 4.0

    Place names in the Bahamas, for routes and waypoint search.

  • CARTO · CARTO basemap terms

    The base map under the radar, conditions and wind-field overlays.

  • RainViewer · RainViewer terms

    Precipitation radar imagery on the maps.

Public domain, credited anyway

Work of the US federal government carries no attribution requirement. We list it because deciding whether to trust a number is easier when you know the tide came from CO-OPS and the warning came from the National Weather Service.

  • eCFR (Office of the Federal Register) · US Government work, public domain

    Title 33 of the Code of Federal Regulations, searched to check whether a proposed restricted or security area is actually created by Part 165 or Part 334. Admin-side review only; no reader-facing surface reads it.

  • NOAA National Weather Service · Public domain (17 U.S.C. § 105)

    Marine zone forecasts, coastal waters forecasts, warnings and watches.

  • NOAA Tides and Currents (CO-OPS) · Public domain (17 U.S.C. § 105)

    Tide predictions, tidal current predictions and the station lists behind them.

  • NOAA National Data Buoy Center · Public domain (17 U.S.C. § 105)

    Buoy and coastal station observations: wind, waves, water temperature.

  • NOAA Storm Prediction Center · Public domain (17 U.S.C. § 105)

    Convective outlooks behind the thunderstorm read.

  • US Army Corps of Engineers · Public domain (17 U.S.C. § 105)

    The Federal navigation channels a route follows, and the depth each project is authorized and maintained to. Project depths, never the water available: the channel shoals between surveys. Survey dates come from eHydro.

  • USGS · Public domain

    River gauge heights and flow, and the GNIS names for US maritime places.

  • NOAA Aviation Weather Center and the FAA · Public domain (17 U.S.C. § 105)

    METAR, TAF, temporary flight restrictions and NOTAMs. Aviation is parked; the data is still credited.

    The airport database behind the parked aviation vertical.

What none of them are

None of these sources endorse GoNoGo Weather, and none of them checked our arithmetic. A forecast is a forecast whoever publishes it, and the call to go is always the captain’s.
